About the Project
The QUBI project (Kompetenzorientiertes, modulares Lernen in Quantitativer Biologie) is an initiative at the University of Bern designed to integrate quantitative methods teaching coherently into the Biology curriculum. By establishing a “Bridging Course”, the project connects foundational statistics and mathematics with practical biological research. We are seeking a motivated individual to support the content development, technical implementation and digital coordination of this curriculum. You will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment alongside researchers in ecology, evolution and mathematical biology, with flexible working conditions in a supportive, forward-thinking team – and the chance to help shape the future of biological education at the University of Bern.
Your Responsibilities
- Development of practical materials: create and maintain interactive exercises in R or Python (notebooks/Quarto) using real biological datasets
- Digital infrastructure: design, organise and maintain course materials and information on the ILIAS platform
- Curriculum alignment: coordinate with lecturers from the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the Mathematical Institute to synchronise practical exercises with theoretical coursework
- Curriculum alignment: coordinate with lecturers from the Department of Biology to identify biological case studies and relevant datasets for the Bridging Course
- Student support: assist in the delivery of practical sessions, providing technical guidance on data analysis and programming tasks
- Project documentation: assist the project leads in documenting workflows and preparing materials for the long-term integration of the course into the BSc Biology curriculum
Your Profile
- A university degree (BSc, MSc or PhD) in Biology, Bioinformatics or a related field; a BSc in Biology from a Swiss university is a plus
- Proficiency in R or Python for data processing and visualisation
- Practical experience with learning management systems, specifically ILIAS, is a plus
- A structured approach to organising learning materials and an interest in university-level teaching support; curiosity to leverage AI tools for teaching and learning is a plus
- Fluency in German and English, as the role involves coordination across departments and the preparation of materials in both languages
- The ability and interest to contribute ideas and develop project parts independently
