Start of employment 1 August 2026 (negotiable), permanent employmentWith approximately 80 members of staff, including eight professors, the Department of Philosophy strives to conduct research of international significance and provide an attractive and wide-ranging program of courses for its approximately 800 students.
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Zurich, situated in the heart of Zurich, provides an intellectually stimulating environment for research and teaching. Your responsibilities
The role carries a teaching load of eight contact hours per week during term time. Our teaching requirements are in practical philosophy and the history of philosophy, and include both seminars in practical philosophy and the history of philosophy, as well as lectures for our mandatory introductory courses in practical philosophy. Seminars aimed at strengthening students' writing, reasoning, and argumentative skills also need to be covered as part of the teaching required for this post. In addition to the just mentioned core teaching duties, we expect lecturers to be involved in the development of the Philosophy Department's course offerings and its study programs. 30% of the role's working hours are set aside for independent research and, in the event of successful external grant applications, for leading research groups.Your profile
In addition to holding a PhD in philosophy, candidates should have a track record of excellent publications in practical philosophy and the history of philosophy. They should be willing to contribute to the department's research focus on Normativity. Experience in teaching, particularly in practical philosophy and the history of philosophy, together with strong communication skills, are essential. Candidates should be committed to delivering high-quality university teaching and demonstrate an interest in the development of innovative teaching approaches. All courses are taught in German or English; the successful candidate unable to teach in German upon appointment will be expected to acquire the necessary proficiency within three years.The University of Zurich is committed to being a diverse, equitable, and inclusive institution.
